Macron-Starmer conflict threatens collapse of "coalition of the willing"
The conflict between French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Keir Starmer threatens to cause the collapse of the “coalition of the willing” supporting Ukraine, as reported by Politico, citing sources.
According to two French officials, the “coalition of the willing” lacks a clear direction, which is linked to London placing too much emphasis on security guarantees from the United States, which have yet to be delivered.
In the UK, meanwhile, Macron is accused of focusing solely on “his legacy” as his presidential term comes to an end.
One source familiar with the Iran negotiations noted that the French president tried to portray himself as a “peacemaker.”
According to Politico, the main cause of the “cracks” in the Macron-Starmer relationship is their approach to the United States. Officials from both countries increasingly express frustration over how the other side has chosen to engage with the U.S. president, the report says.
