EU trio to reimpose sanctions on Tehran after failed negotiations on nuclear program
The United Kingdom, Germany, and France — may initiate the process of reinstating sanctions against Iran as negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program have not been successful.
This information was shared by several unnamed diplomats cited by Reuters, Caliber.Az reports.
According to their statements, the EU trio is likely to begin the process of reimposing sanctions already on August 28 and notify the UN Security Council of its decision in writing.
Sanctions on Iran’s financial, banking, energy, and defence sectors would be reinstated 30 days after that.
Representatives of the E3 countries met Iran on August 26 "to try to revive diplomacy over the nuclear programme" ahead of a looming expiration date that would see them lose the ability of restoring sanctions against Tehran that were lifted under a 2015 nuclear accord with world powers.
“Real negotiations will begin after the letter [to the UN Security Council] is sent,” a Western diplomat told the agency on condition of anonymity.
The sources claim that the E3 has decided to commence that process as they accuse Iran of having violated the 2015 deal by further developing a nuclear weapon which goes beyond its civilian needs.
Tehran has repeatedly denied that it was developing nuclear weapons.
