Media: Gunfire reported near Venezuela’s presidential palace VIDEO
Gunfire was reported near Venezuela’s presidential palace in central Caracas on the evening of January 5, according to witness accounts and local media. Authorities later said the incident did not involve a confrontation and was brought under control, BNO News reports.
Reports emerged at around 8:30 p.m. local time near Miraflores Palace, where videos shared on social media appeared to show weapon fire directed into the air. Additional footage circulating online suggested sustained gunfire in the area, with armed security personnel visible nearby.
In a subsequent statement, Venezuela’s Ministry of Communication said police fired warning shots after detecting unauthorised drones flying over central Caracas. The ministry stressed that there were no clashes and that the situation was stable, according to CGTN.
The incident comes amid heightened political tensions following a U.S. operation that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife at a military bunker near Caracas.
After Maduro’s detention, Venezuela’s Supreme Court appointed Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as interim president. Rodríguez has condemned the U.S. operation while also signalling openness to dialogue and cooperation in her public statements.
