Media: Putin envoy Dmitriev meets Trump officials in US for Ukraine peace talks
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev is in the United States holding meetings with members of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration to discuss a potential peace deal for Ukraine and broader U.S.-Russia economic cooperation, sources familiar with the visit told Reuters.
The discussions come ahead of a key U.S. decision on whether to extend sanctions relief on Russian oil, which is due to expire on April 11 and may also feature in the talks.
The United States recently issued a 30-day waiver allowing countries to purchase sanctioned Russian oil and petroleum products currently stranded at sea, a move U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as an effort to stabilise global energy markets disrupted by the Iran conflict.
The sanctions relief followed a phone call between Trump and Putin on March 9, and a subsequent visit by Dmitriev to the U.S., where he met a delegation that included Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner to discuss energy market pressures.
