Media: Türkiye backs Syria’s sovereign right to manage ties with Russia
Turkish authorities have reaffirmed that the Syrian government should independently determine how to approach and develop its bilateral relations with Russia.
This stance was conveyed by sources within the Turkish Foreign Ministry in response to questions regarding Ankara’s position on a potential Russian military presence in Syria, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
The officials emphasized Ankara’s support for “bilateral relations based on mutual respect and consideration of interests between the Syrian government and any third country.”
“Türkiye pursues an active policy of fostering cooperation between the Syrian government and the international community to ensure ongoing support for national efforts to establish stability and security in Syria,” the sources stated.
In this context, they underscored that Ankara “advocates for sovereign and equal bilateral relations based on mutual respect and consideration of interests between the Syrian government and any third country.”
Concluding their remarks, the sources noted, “Meanwhile, naturally, the Syrian government itself decides how to approach bilateral relations with the Russian Federation and how to build them.”
