Merz says US lacks capacity to transfer Tomahawk systems to Germany
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has confirmed in an interview with ARD that the United States will not currently deploy Tomahawk cruise missiles in Germany.
The broadcaster clarified that the missiles in question were pledged to Germany by former US President Joe Biden in 2024.
Merz noted that the United States itself is currently facing shortages of weapons. According to him, Washington does not yet have the capacity to forgo Tomahawk systems in order to transfer them to allies.
The chancellor added that in relation to these missiles, “the train has not yet left the station.”
Tomahawk cruise missiles, which have a range capable of reaching Russia, are intended to strengthen Germany’s deterrence capabilities until Europe develops comparable systems independently.
The German politician also ruled out any connection between recent decisions by the US administration and his own criticism of the US president. Merz stressed that Berlin is not abandoning cooperation with Washington.
