Mikheil Kavelashvili elected sixth president of Georgia
Mikheil Kavelashvili, the nominee of the ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party and a former member of parliament, has been elected the sixth president of Georgia.
The results were confirmed following the vote count, which was streamed live on the parliament's official website, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
A total of 224 members of the 300-strong electoral college cast their votes in favor of Kavelashvili, securing the two-thirds majority required to win in the first round of voting.
Mikheil Kavelashvili has been elected as the sixth president of Georgia, according to the official results presented by the Central Election Commission (CEC). Giorgi Kalandarishvili, the Chairperson of the Central Election Commission of Georgia confirmed the outcome, signing the final election protocol.
CEC Secretary Giorgi Javakhishvili explained that a total of 225 electors participated in the election, with one ballot being invalidated.
For the first time, Georgia's president was elected not by direct vote but by a collegiate body of 300 electors.
The only candidate in the race was Mikheil Kavelashvili, a former member of parliament and footballer, nominated by the ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party.
