Mine blasts, artillery strikes, targeted attacks: Victims confront Armenian citizen Vardanyan in court PHOTO

27 May 2025 20:13

The Baku Military Court continued hearings on the criminal case against Armenian citizen Ruben Vardanyan, who stands accused of numerous serious charges, including torture, mercenarism, terrorism, financing terrorism, and violations of the laws and customs of war.

The hearing was presided over by Judge Zeynal Aghayev and a panel of judges consisting of Anar Rzayev and Jamal Ramazanov (reserve judge Gunel Samadova). The accused was provided with an interpreter in the language of his choice, i.e. Russian, as well as lawyers for his defense, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

A significant portion of the hearing was devoted to the testimonies of victims and legal successors of victims who suffered injuries or lost loved ones during the Armenian occupation and subsequent military actions.

Tahir Aliyev, father of Sabuhi Aliyev, testified that his son was killed in Aghdara by Armenian forces, including remnants of the Armenian army and illegal armed groups. Similarly, Seymur Teymurov recounted being injured in Aghdara when a Kornet missile struck the vehicle he was driving, resulting in the deaths of two other passengers.

Several other victims shared harrowing details of their injuries sustained during the conflict:

Rafig Ahmadov was wounded by a landmine in Aghdam.

Ramil Alakbarov suffered injuries in a mine explosion in Khankandi.

Mehman Guliyev lost his right eye due to shrapnel wounds from heavy artillery shelling in Kalbajar.

Rashad Abdullayev was injured by an anti-tank missile in Aghdam.

Agil Isparzada was wounded by a shell in Khojavand, where two were killed and three injured.

Ramil Khankishiyev and Khasi Verdiyev were both wounded by mines in Aghdara; Mirmusa Mehdizada was killed in the same incident.

Abdullah Asgarzada was injured when a clearly marked medical service vehicle was targeted and shelled by Armenian forces in Khojavand.

Vagif Kheyrullayev suffered wounds from artillery fire in the Lachin district, which also claimed one life and injured several others.

Tural Dadashov testified to being wounded by a mortar explosion in Kalbajar, where multiple fatalities were reported.

During the proceedings, forensic medical examination reports detailing the injuries of the victims were presented and read out.

The next court session is scheduled for June 3.
