Minister: Hungary's survival dependent on continued oil supplies from Russia
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó has stated that the country cannot survive without ongoing oil supplies from Russia.
"If Hungary were to stop receiving oil from Russia, we simply wouldn't survive. We wouldn't be able to sustain the country in a broad sense," Szijjártó declared, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
He emphasised that Hungary lacks suitable alternatives for meeting its energy needs. Szijjártó added that there are no viable options for securing the necessary fuel resources outside of the current Russian supplies.
The European Commission previously advised Hungary and Slovakia to seek alternative sources of oil and move away from Russian supplies in response to complaints about Ukraine blocking deliveries from Russia.
Szijjártó announced that representatives from Hungary, Russia, and Slovakia have held phone talks regarding Ukraine's suspension of oil transit from Russia. Hungary had previously discussed oil transit through Ukraine with both Russia and Slovakia.
