Media: Ex-FBI chief to be charged with lying to Congress
Former FBI Director James Comey is expected to face charges of providing false testimony to Congress, MSNBC has reported, citing sources who noted that the indictment could come “possibly in the coming days, before the five-year statute of limitations expires.”
The allegations date back to September 2020, when Comey testified before Congress in connection with claims of alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
According to the report, it remains unclear “the full scope of charges being prepared against Comey.”
Sources believe the indictment will likely be brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.
In August 2025, Attorney General Pam Bondi ordered a grand jury probe into whether Obama-era officials (including Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan) fabricated or politicised intelligence on Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The probe followed the release by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard of more than one hundred documents that cast doubt on the findings of U.S. intelligence agencies concerning Moscow’s alleged role.
On September 21, President Trump posted on Truth Social urging Bondi to prosecute Comey, Sen. Adam Schiff, and NY AG Letitia James, calling it "JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!" This echoes his long-standing grievances against Comey, whom he fired in 2017 amid the Russia probe.
On September 23, acting EDVA U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert resigned under pressure after reportedly refusing to pursue charges due to insufficient evidence. Trump appointed Lindsey Halligan (a former personal lawyer) as an interim replacement, accelerating the case.
