Mysterious hole appears in Türkiye’s Konya PHOTO

25 February 2023 17:10

A large hole with a diametre of 37 metres and a depth of 12 metres appeared in one of the fields of Konya state, central Türkiye, after several earthquakes struck the south of the country and northwestern Syria, which led to the death of more than 50,000 people and widespread destruction.

The director of the "Ubrok" Centre for Research and Applications at Konya Technical University (KTÜN), Fethullah Erik, told Anadolu that a new hole was formed in the Karapinar region of Konya state, and pointed out that the hole is located in an area of 1,400 square metres in a field on the Sit Haci plateau, according to Teller Report.

Erik emphasised that they could not find a link between the newly formed crater and the recent earthquakes that hit the area.

And some residents in the region expressed that there were a number of similar craters that previously appeared in the region, even before the recent wave of earthquakes.

Such pits of different sizes and shapes appeared in different parts of the world, and they are called by local names such as "the pits of the end of the world" and "the gate of hell" and others, as a metaphor for the terror they cause among the residents of the region in which they appear in mysterious circumstances.

On February 6, a double earthquake struck southern Türkiye and northern Syria, the first measuring 7.7 degrees and the second 7.6 degrees, followed by thousands of violent aftershocks, killing more than 50,000 people in the two countries, most of them in Türkiye, in addition to massive destruction.
