Iran eyes Chinese J-10C fighters amid delays in Russian jet deliveries

27 June 2025 18:04

Iran is considering acquiring Chinese Chengdu J-10CE fighter jets to rapidly upgrade its aging air force, following high-level defence discussions in Beijing.

The development comes as Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh visited China, reportedly exploring options for purchasing the Chinese-made “4++ generation” aircraft, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The J-10CE—currently in use by Pakistan—has demonstrated regional air superiority. The fighter is equipped with advanced KLJ-7A AESA radar and PL-15 long-range air-to-air missiles.

Iran has previously announced a deal to purchase Su-35 jets from Russia. While a deputy defence minister claimed in November 2023 that the sale was finalized, conflicting reports have since emerged. A reported April 2024 order for 24 aircraft was later denied by Iranian media. In January 2025, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Ali Shadmani confirmed the purchase but gave no delivery details. Analysts believe Russia’s strained military commitments with NATO may be delaying the transfers.

Iran’s air force remains heavily outdated, with many jets dating back to the 1970s and 1980s, including US-built F-4s and F-14s. According to the World Directory of Modern Military Warships, 58% of the Iranian air fleet consists of fighter aircraft.

Some analysts argue that Iran lacks the infrastructure to absorb modern jets quickly, but others dispute that view. “Converting squadrons to modern aircraft like the J-10C or even the MiG-35 would not take a decade,” noted Military Watch Magazine, citing examples like India’s rapid transition to the Su-30MKI.

Though Iran remains without new fighter deliveries nearly five years after the UN arms embargo ended, pressure is mounting. Experts warn that modernizing the air force is no longer optional—it is a strategic imperative.
