BRICS leaders back Iran’s push to join New Development Bank—official

BRICS leaders have agreed to Iran joining the New Development Bank, Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said.

Mohajerani noted that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also held meetings with six presidents, prime ministers and crown princes during the BRICS summit in India, Iran International reports.

The New Development Bank, often referred to as the BRICS bank, was established in 2015 to finance infrastructure and sustainable development projects in member countries.

However, the summit’s final declaration did not explicitly announce Iran’s admission to the bank. According to the New Development Bank, the leaders instead called for the expedited consideration of membership applications from interested BRICS countries.
