PM Kobakhidze on Georgia’s challenges: Foreigners tried to write our laws
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that Georgia has come under attack from external forces who perceived the country as weakened, amid ongoing domestic unrest and international criticism.
Kobakhidze addressed what he described as sustained foreign efforts to undermine Georgia's institutions, noting that these pressures intensified during recent protests, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
Demonstrations, which began last year and occasionally escalated into violent clashes with police through January 2025, have been backed by several Western politicians, he said.
“Against the backdrop of constant external turmoil, some believed that the state had been weakened and decided to attack it. Among other things, this manifested itself in the events of November-December,” the prime minister said, referring to a period of particularly heightened tensions.
Kobakhidze accused external actors of attempting to erode Georgia’s state structures by covert means. “Through secret funding, they tried to undermine the reputation of our church by financing LGBT propaganda, political actions, etc.,” he alleged.
He further criticised what he called foreign interference in Georgia’s legal system and policymaking. “Someone thought that a foreigner could write laws for us from the outside. I remember, just a few years ago, how foreigners, including diplomats who had no connection to legislation and lawmaking, sat at the table and wrote laws with us, often bypassing us,” Kobakhidze said.
He also claimed that Georgia had been pressured by foreign actors to appoint or remove specific individuals from key government positions. “We were being dictated to from the outside about who should remain, for example, as Minister of Internal Affairs, and who should not.”
In concluding his remarks, the prime minister declared that his government would firmly defend the country’s sovereignty. “We have a very specific responsibility to our heroes, our ancestors, our country and society to firmly defend our country and national interests. This is precisely the direction in which the government's activities will be directed in the future,” Kobakhidze said.
