Polish embassy assumes EU duties in Iran amid diplomatic pullout

27 June 2025 13:10

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation with his Polish counterpart, Radosław Sikorski, on June 26 to discuss the evolving situation in the Middle East.

During the call, Foreign Minister Sikorski informed Araghchi that the Polish Embassy in Tehran has assumed consular responsibilities on behalf of several European Union countries that have temporarily closed their diplomatic missions in Iran due to security concerns.

“Foreign Minister Sikorski announced that the Polish Embassy in Tehran has taken over the responsibilities of some EU countries that have evacuated their missions,” the Polish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Germany, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and Portugal are among the countries that have suspended the operations of their embassies in Tehran amid heightened regional instability.

In response, Araghchi strongly criticised what he described as the supportive stance of certain European countries toward Israel, calling on them to adopt a “responsible and fair” approach toward what he referred to as the “continued aggression of the Zionist regime.”

Sikorski, for his part, welcomed the ceasefire brokered between Iran and Israel, expressing hope that it would help ease tensions across the region.

Earlier, Polish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pawel Wronski confirmed that Poland’s embassy in Tehran remained operational, making it one of the few European missions still present in the Iranian capital.

The crisis escalated on June 13 when Israel launched a large-scale military operation targeting Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure. Tehran responded within 24 hours with retaliatory strikes. On June 22, the United States entered the conflict, launching airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities.

Iran responded by targeting the Al Udeid airbase in Qatar — Washington’s largest military facility in the Middle East. According to US officials, the missile strike caused no casualties or significant damage.

Following sustained diplomatic efforts, US President Donald Trump announced on June 24 that both Iran and Israel had agreed to a complete ceasefire, which has since come into force.
