NATO chief praises Trump’s stance on Ukraine, emphasizes peace talks
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has voiced his support for US President Donald Trump's approach to the ongoing situation in Ukraine, stating that Trump's efforts have led to a significant breakthrough in peace talks.
Rutte made these comments during a press conference in Pristina, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
"I take the side of President Trump on the situation in Ukraine. I want to really note the fact that, thanks to him, there has now been a breakthrough when it comes to Ukraine, in terms of starting talks with both the Russians and the Ukrainians," Rutte remarked.
The NATO chief highlighted the initiative from the UK and France regarding security guarantees for Ukraine following the end of the hot phase of the conflict. One of the potential solutions discussed, according to Rutte, involves the deployment of European ground forces to Ukraine, though he acknowledged there are alternative approaches.
However, he also echoed Trump’s assertion that peace has not yet been achieved, stressing the necessity of a peace agreement before any long-term security measures can be put in place.
"President Trump is right that before you can keep the peace, you first need to have the peace," Rutte said.
While security guarantees for Ukraine remain a priority, negotiations must first yield a formal ceasefire or settlement, he added.
Rutte’s comments come at a time of heightened tension between the US and Ukraine, particularly after President Zelenskyy's confrontational meeting with Trump at the White House. This altercation led to the suspension of US military aid to Ukraine, a significant shift in Washington’s stance toward Kyiv.
In response to these developments, European leaders, with notable backing from the European Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen, have rallied in support of Ukraine. The Commission has seized the moment to announce the commencement of a new arms race in Europe, alongside preparations to expand Brussels' influence in the military sphere.
The complex geopolitical situation remains fluid, with Europe and the US continuing to navigate differing strategies in pursuit of peace and stability in Ukraine.
