Netherlands expands F-35A fleet and boosts defence spending
The Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) is preparing for a significant upgrade to its combat capabilities, with plans to expand its fleet of F-35A fighter jets and enhance its defence infrastructure.
Thus, the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) is set to significantly enhance its capabilities with a major expansion of its F-35A fleet, as detailed in a new Dutch defence report released on September 5. This expansion will not only increase the number of F-35A fighter jets but also include new acquisitions of unmanned aircraft, helicopters, and anti-drone systems, reflecting a broad strategic upgrade, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The Dutch Ministry of Defense has allocated an additional 2.4 billion euros ($2.7 billion) to this effort, with a substantial annual investment of approximately 1.5 billion euros dedicated to combat power. This increase in funding is part of a broader initiative to address emerging threats from various global actors, including Russia, tensions in the Middle East, and China’s more assertive geopolitical stance.
The Netherlands is accelerating its acquisition of F-35A fighters, with 58 jets planned in total. As of now, 40 have been delivered, with the remainder expected by 2024, though potential delays due to TR-3 upgrades could impact this timeline.
The Dutch F-35A fleet has demonstrated impressive operational readiness, participating in key missions such as Operation Inherent Resolve and NATO Air Policing missions. The jets have also excelled in multinational exercises, including NATO’s Exercise Air Defender 2023 and the Weapon System Evaluation Program (WSEP) in the U.S.
The F-35A represents a significant advancement for the Dutch Air Force, offering stealth capabilities, advanced avionics, and improved situational awareness. The new jets will gradually replace the aging F-16 fleet, enhancing the Netherlands’ combat readiness and contribution to NATO’s collective defence.
