New Caledonia airport to shut down due to unrest in archipelago
La Tontouta International Airport near Nouméa, the capital of New Caledonia (French overseas territory in the Pacific Ocean), where unrest continues over a controversial law on expanding electoral rolls, will not resume receiving and dispatching commercial flights until at least June 2.
"The airport is closed until Sunday, June 2," TASS reports, citing a statement published on the airport's website.
To clarify information on canceled flights, passengers are invited to contact airlines directly.
According to the air carrier Air Caledonie, cited by the TV channel Nouvelle Caledonie La 1ere, because of the closure of the airport was canceled 108 flights, it affected 12 thousand passengers. At the same time, the evacuation of French, Australian and New Zealand tourists by special flights from the archipelago continues.
