North Korea rejects US cyber threat allegations

04 August 2026 09:23

North Korea has rejected accusations by the United States and its allies that it is involved in malicious cyber activities, describing the claims as politically motivated and unfounded.

In a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency, a spokesperson for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said the allegations were part of a broader campaign to damage the country’s international standing.

“The United States and its satellites, making noise about the so-called cyber threat from us, have issued a joint warning to tarnish the image of our state. Such a dirty objective is a typical piece of political smear propaganda,” the spokesperson said.

Pyongyang also criticised the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team, accusing its members of disseminating false information and describing the body as a “sham organisation” established by Western nations.

The spokesperson argued that Washington is itself responsible for escalating tensions in cyberspace, citing the development of cyber forces, joint exercises with allies and what it described as the use of cybersecurity concerns as a pretext to pressure sovereign states. The statement added that North Korea would resist any attempts to politicise cybersecurity issues or use them as a basis for accusations.

The remarks followed a joint warning issued by the United States, South Korea, Japan and several other countries within the monitoring group, alleging that North Korean-linked cyber operations generate funds used to support weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programmes.
