Opposition leader hails Aussie crew in US submarine strike on Iran's ship
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor said he is “incredibly proud” of Australian service members aboard a US submarine that sank an Iranian vessel near Sri Lanka this week.
Taylor commended them during a speech at a Liberal Party council meeting in New South Wales, Caliber.Az reports per Australian media.
“I'm incredibly proud of the Australians who are serving in US submarines and other vessels right now,” he said. "Their service and our support for our allies is about protecting our way of life".
On March 6, the Prime Minister confirmed that three Australian personnel were on board the US attack submarine as part of a rotation under the AUKUS agreement.
He stated that they did not participate in any “offensive” actions.
As of February, more than 170 Royal Australian Navy personnel have been trained to operate US nuclear submarines, and 70 Australian sailors are currently serving on Virginia-class US submarines.
