Pakistan responds to India’s actions: Trade, diplomatic ties, and flights severed

24 April 2025 16:26

Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC) has announced a series of measures in response to what it described as “reckless and irresponsible behaviour by India, which arbitrarily disregards international conventions, UN Security Council resolutions, and its international obligations.”

The NSC meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and attended by senior civilian and military leadership, Caliber.Az reports, citing Pakistani media.

One of the most significant decisions was Pakistan’s suspension of the 1972 Simla Agreement and the closure of the Wagah border with India.

In addition, Pakistan is suspending all trade with India, including transit trade through third countries, and is closing its airspace to all Indian airlines, as well as to any aircraft owned or operated by Indian entities.

The Pakistani authorities stated that all trade with India, including shipments through third countries, is suspended immediately, and that airspace is closed to all Indian carriers and aircraft.

“Pakistan categorically rejects India’s statement regarding the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty,” said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in an official statement.

“Any attempt to stop or divert water flow that belongs to Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty, or any usurpation of the rights of lower riparian states, will be regarded as an act of war and will be met with the full spectrum of national power,” the NSC declared.

Pakistan also declared Indian military, naval, and air force advisors stationed in Islamabad as persona non grata, ordering them to leave the country immediately, and no later than April 30, 2025.

“These positions at the Indian High Commission are hereby annulled. Support staff for these advisors are also instructed to return to India,” the statement said. As part of these measures, the number of Indian High Commission personnel in Islamabad will be reduced to 30 diplomats and staff as of April 30.
