Paris 2024: Azerbaijan climbs to 15th place in medal tally
Azerbaijan has surged to 15th place in the medal standings at the Summer Olympics in Paris, bolstered by recent achievements in judo.
The move up the rankings follows a remarkable performance by Azerbaijani judoka Zelim Kotsoyev, who secured a gold medal in the 100 kg weight category. Kotsoyev’s victory marks a significant boost for Azerbaijan, which had already celebrated another judo champion, Hidayat Heydarov, who won gold in the 73 kg category earlier in the Games, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
As of today, the top three positions in the medal tally are held by China, with 11 gold, 7 silver, and 6 bronze medals; the USA, with 9 gold, 15 silver, and 13 bronze medals; and France, with 8 gold, 11 silver, and 8 bronze medals.
Turkey and Ukraine are tied for 35th place, each having earned 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. Georgia is currently in 17th place, boasting 1 gold and 2 silver medals.
To date, athletes from 50 countries have secured medals in the ongoing Games. The Olympics are scheduled to conclude on August 11, with more events and potential changes in the standings expected in the coming days.
