Péter Magyar calls on Hungary’s leadership to resign
Péter Magyar, leader of Hungary’s opposition Tisza Party, spoke at Batthyány Square on the banks of the Danube and declared a historic victory for his party, according to HVG.
He stated that no party in Hungary’s history had ever received such a strong mandate — claiming two-thirds of the vote, enough to form a constitutional majority, with a total of 3.3 million voters supporting the party.
“Together, we have overthrown the Orbán regime, liberated Hungary, and reclaimed our homeland. The ruling party deployed its entire apparatus and spent hundreds of billions on a campaign of lies and hatred, but today truth has triumphed over falsehood,” he said.
Magyar stressed that this is a day of victory even for those Hungarians who did not vote for Tisza, because “Hungary wants to be a country that is not a vassal to anyone.”
He called on Tamás Sulyok—who was previously nominated by Fidesz, led by Viktor Orbán—to grant Tisza a mandate to form a government and then step down.
He also urged other Fidesz appointees, including the prosecutor general and the head of the Constitutional Court, to resign, adding that it would be better for them to leave voluntarily, otherwise they would be replaced anyway.
