Poland announces escalation of situation on border with Belarus
Polish Minister of Defense, Mariusz Błaszczak, has stated that the situation at the border with Belarus has escalated, with migrants attempting to cross into Polish territory behaving increasingly aggressively.
Błaszczak noted that migrants are throwing stones, branches, and using grinders to try to break through the barrier. Just on the night from April 4 to 5, several hundred attempts to illegally enter Poland were recorded, Caliber.Az reports, citing Polish media.
He explained that the intensification of such actions "is aimed at weakening Europe, Poland."
"This is an attack on Poland, not an attempt to seek asylum. This is probably clear to everyone now, and we must not assist in such procedures... in the illegal crossing of state borders. It is a violation of the law, crossing the border illegally," emphasized the minister.
In March 2025, Poland suspended the right to claim asylum for migrants arriving via its border with Belarus, citing concerns over hybrid threats and national security. This suspension allows for a temporary halt of up to 60 days, extendable with parliamentary approval. The move has drawn criticism from rights groups, warning that it violates EU and international law.
In April, Poland extended the exclusion zone along its border with Belarus by 90 days and has enacted laws allowing for the temporary suspension of asylum rights. These measures are justified by the government as necessary to counteract what they describe as hybrid warfare tactics employed by Belarus.
