Poland dominates Ukraine’s coke imports as domestic production collapses
Poland has emerged as Ukraine’s biggest supplier of coke, accounting for almost all of the country’s imports in 2025, according to industry data.
Ukrainian steelmakers increased imports of coke and semi-coke by 3.2% year on year in January–November 2025 to 642,800 tonnes, calculations by the GMK Centre based on State Customs Service figures show, Caliber.Az reports per Ukrainian media.
Nearly the entire volume came from Poland, whose share reached 94%. Ukraine imported 602,010 tonnes of coke from Poland during the period. Smaller volumes were sourced from Indonesia (27,670 tonnes) and the Czech Republic (13,060 tonnes).
The GMK Centre said the rise in imports reflects a long-term decline in domestic production. Between 2013 and 2024, Ukraine’s output of coking coal fell by 74%, while coke production dropped by almost 85%.
The contraction is largely due to the loss of control over key assets, with around 64% of coal mines and coke plants located in territories no longer under Kyiv’s control.
