Poland rejects Russia’s May 9 ceasefire proposal as “absurd," political
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Warsaw does not support Russia’s proposal for a one-day ceasefire on May 9, describing the initiative as politically motivated and unrelated to genuine peace efforts.
Speaking ahead of the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Tusk said the proposal appeared aimed at ensuring a military parade in Moscow could proceed without disruption, Caliber.Az reports via Polish media.
“This is absurd. I will in no way persuade Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to agree to such proposals,” Tusk said, referring to Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to Polish officials, Warsaw supports only ceasefire initiatives that could lead to a comprehensive and lasting peace settlement, rather than short-term or symbolic pauses in fighting.
Tusk added that any ceasefire should contribute to meaningful negotiations, not be tied to specific dates or political events.
Ukrainian agencies tasked with countering disinformation have also expressed skepticism, viewing such proposals as driven more by internal Russian concerns, including security in Moscow, than by a genuine effort to achieve peace.
