Professors from Tabriz University demand Azerbaijani language education in Iran
Dozens of professors from Tabriz University in Iran have signed a petition calling for the introduction of education in the Azerbaijani language.
The petition, addressed to President Masoud Pezeshkian, emphasises the need to uphold the rights of Azerbaijanis to receive education in their native language, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
The petition references a recent move by the Iranian Parliament, which on February 27 approved a bill supporting the teaching of literature in the native languages of non-Persian speaking communities. The petition has been signed by 142 PhD holders and engineers from the university's academic staff. The document highlights the importance of adhering to Articles 15 and 19 of the Iranian Constitution, which guarantee the right to education in native languages.
The professors urged President Pezeshkian to ensure the implementation and protection of these constitutional provisions. The petitioners also reminded President Pezeshkian of his campaign promises to address the issue of education in native languages, particularly for Azerbaijanis in Iran, and called for immediate action to fulfill these commitments.
