Greece jails Kazakh national for 125 years over migrant smuggling PHOTO

03 August 2026 17:48

A 24-year-old Kazakh citizen, Rashid Kadyrov, has been sentenced in Greece to 125 years in prison and fined more than $2 million, his mother, Nurkhan Kadyrova, has said.

Speaking to a local media outlet, she noted that Kadyrov travelled to Türkiye in search of work before later contacting her to say he had been imprisoned in Greece, Caliber.Az reports.

She said it subsequently emerged that the job he had found through Instagram involved transporting illegal migrants.

Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry confirmed it was aware of the case in response to inquiries from local media.

The ministry remarked that, under Greek law, the offence for which Kadyrov was convicted falls into the category of serious crimes.

"Our diplomats in Greece are providing the citizen with the necessary consular and legal assistance within the scope of their authority. The matter remains under close attention," the ministry added.
