AP: US proposal could lift Iran's oil blockade in broader de-escalation plan

03 August 2026 10:16

A new proposal put forward after the postponement of a planned US strike on Iran goes beyond the scope of nuclear negotiations and outlines a broader package of reciprocal de-escalation measures, the Associated Press (AP) reports, citing a regional official.

According to the source, the proposal includes restoring unrestricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and ending attacks across the region, including those carried out by Iran-backed groups in Iraq against Gulf states and Jordan.

In return, the United States would lift its maritime blockade of Iran and allow Tehran to resume oil exports.

The official stressed that no final agreement has yet been reached on these terms, but mediators are continuing efforts to finalise the proposal.

At the same time, Tehran and Muscat have entered the final stage of separate bilateral talks on managing maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The report noted that these discussions are being conducted independently from negotiations over the status of the strategic waterway itself.
