Archaeologists discover centuries-old mosque in Kazakhstan PHOTO

03 August 2026 18:10

Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a mosque dating back to the second half of the 13th and 14th centuries at the medieval settlement of Otyrar in Kazakhstan's Turkestan Region, shedding new light on the city's history during the Golden Horde period.

Researchers said the structure is the oldest known mosque discovered at the historic site. Excavations also revealed a stone-paved street leading to the mosque, a find described as unique for the ancient city, Caliber.Az reports via Kazakh government website

Among the other discoveries was a brick staircase dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, suggesting that the street remained in use for several centuries after the mosque was built.

According to the researchers, the findings reinforce Otyrar's historical significance as one of the principal commercial and cultural centres along the Great Silk Road.
