Protests erupt in Germany over US missile deployment
Approximately 2,500 individuals gathered in Wiesbaden, Germany, to protest the planned deployment of US medium-range missiles in the country.
The demonstration was peaceful, though it resulted in significant disruptions to local traffic, Caliber.Az reports citing German media.
The protesters voiced their opposition to both the missile deployment and the broader militarization of the region. The protest was one of several organized by public figures, politicians, and human rights activists who have expressed concern over the potential security implications of hosting US missiles in Germany.
Earlier this year, an open letter was circulated, calling for the United States to abandon plans to deploy intermediate- and shorter-range missiles (INF) in Germany. The signatories of the letter warned that such a move could exacerbate tensions between Russia and NATO, raising the specter of military conflict in the region. The concerns are rooted in the historical context of the INF Treaty, which had previously aimed to eliminate such missile systems in Europe.
Although the demonstration on March 29 remained non-violent, it underscores growing apprehension among segments of the German public regarding the potential escalation of military tensions in Europe.
