Putin ally sparks row with Nazi-era remark aimed at German chancellor
Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev sharply reacted to a statement by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about plans to make the Bundeswehr the strongest regular army in Europe.
In a post on the social media platform MAX, Medvedev called Merz a “demon” and asked: “Have you lost track of time? It’s 2026, not 1933!” He accompanied the post with an image depicting the German chancellor in attire resembling an SS uniform.
Medvedev’s remarks followed Merz’s speech at the 62nd Munich Security Conference. During the event, the German leader announced plans for accelerated modernisation of the Bundeswehr aimed at turning it into the most powerful regular armed force in Europe. He emphasised the importance of strengthening the defence-industrial sector, creating high-technology clusters, and implementing new weapons procurement projects.
Merz also stated that the international order based on legal norms and rules no longer exists. According to him, Germany has abandoned great-power politics and does not seek hegemony in Europe, instead favouring partnership-based leadership.
The chancellor additionally said he views European nuclear deterrence as an integral element of NATO’s nuclear-sharing framework and confirmed that he has begun discussions on the issue with French President Emmanuel Macron.
