Putin: We greatly value our relationship with Kazakhstan VIDEO / Updated

10 October 2025 16:26

Russian President Vladimir Putin has described Russia’s relationship with Kazakhstan as “special,” attributing it not only to personal ties with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, but also to the two countries’ shared role in driving integration across the post-Soviet space.

“We greatly value our relationship with Kazakhstan," Caliber.Az quotes President Putin as saying.

"I can confidently say that we have a special relationship, not only due to our personal friendly ties, but also because Kazakhstan and Russia have, to a certain extent, been initiators of integration processes in the post-Soviet region,” he added.

The Russian leader highlighted Kazakhstan’s historical role in launching the Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC) and noted its continued proactive stance on a range of issues.

He added: “It must be said that everything we do on the bilateral track also strengthens our cooperation with colleagues within the CIS,” while acknowledging that many bilateral matters require constant attention.

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his Kazakh counterpart, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, as part of a busy schedule during his state visit to Tajikistan, according to Russian media.

Putin arrived in Dushanbe on October 8 for what has been described as a high-profile diplomatic mission. On October 9, he held talks with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, addressed the Russia–Central Asia summit, and met Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, signalling Moscow’s intent to deepen regional ties.

The meeting with Tokayev came ahead of a session of the Council of CIS Heads of State on October 10, where both leaders participated.

On October 10, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) leaders signed 19 official documents during a summit in Tajikistan, the Kremlin announced.

Key decisions included granting the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) observer status within the CIS and establishing a new “CIS Plus” cooperation framework. Agreements also covered the 2026 CIS chairmanship, Secretary-General appointments, and the next Council of Heads of State meeting.

The summit endorsed programmes on countering terrorism and extremism, strengthening border security, military cooperation, and regional energy security through 2030. Legal and humanitarian issues, including prisoner transfers and termination of certain past treaties, were also addressed.
