Qatar Airways makes history with $200 billion order for 160 Boeing jets
Qatar Airways has sealed a historic $200 billion deal with Boeing to purchase 160 widebody aircraft, including the Boeing 777X and 787 models.
The announcement was made during a high-profile signing ceremony in Doha on May 14, 2025, marking the largest widebody aircraft order in Boeing’s history, Caliber.Az reports via foreign website.
This landmark deal strengthens Qatar Airways’ fleet modernization efforts, as it replaces older models such as the Boeing 777s and Airbus A380s. The airline plans to increase capacity on key routes and aims to serve up to 80 million passengers annually by 2030. This growth will cement Doha's status as a major global aviation hub connecting 180 destinations worldwide.
The agreement was witnessed by US President Donald Trump, who was in Doha as part of his Middle East tour. Trump, alongside Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, highlighted the strategic importance of the deal in bolstering economic relations between Qatar and the United States. The partnership aligns with Qatar Airways' vision to maintain one of the world’s most advanced and efficient fleets.
The 160 aircraft order builds on Qatar Airways' previous commitment to 94 Boeing 777X aircraft, which will be key to the airline’s expansion. The 777X, particularly the 777-9 variant, will feature advanced fuel efficiency and a next-generation passenger experience, including the debut of the Qsuite Next Gen business class.
This deal also strengthens Boeing’s position in the Middle East, where the demand for twin-aisle jets like the 777X and 787 is expected to surge in the coming decades. The Middle East is forecast to see these aircraft comprise nearly half of the region’s fleets over the next 20 years.
