Russia awaits further details on Ukraine’s negotiation readiness

24 July 2024 17:20

Russia is awaiting additional information following Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba's recent statement indicating readiness for negotiations with Russia.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the statement, made during Kuleba's meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Guangzhou, aligns with Moscow's stance on maintaining an open dialogue, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

Peskov acknowledged the alignment of Kuleba's comments with Russia’s position but emphasized the need for further details. "We are aware of the statement made during the meeting with Mr. Wang Yi in Beijing. The essence of the message is consistent with our own position on negotiations. However, important details are still unknown, and we will wait for further clarifications," Peskov stated.

Earlier, Kuleba had expressed Ukraine’s readiness to engage in talks with Russia, marking a potential step toward dialogue between the two nations.

"After carefully studying the so-called 'six-point consensus' of China and Brazil, Ukraine expressed readiness for reasonable and constructive negotiations with Russia to achieve a fair and lasting peace," the minister said.

In a separate statement, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed doubts about Ukraine’s recent peace proposals, referencing past experiences with failed negotiations. Zakharova highlighted that Kyiv had initially approved a draft peace agreement with Russia in March 2022 during talks in Istanbul. However, Ukraine subsequently halted communication and enacted a law that prohibits negotiations with Moscow.

Zakharova criticized both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his administration, noting that neither they nor other branches of the Ukrainian government or Western allies have taken steps to revoke the law blocking talks with Russia.

“We hear many words, but we don’t see any concrete actions,” Zakharova remarked. She suggested that Ukraine's apparent shift in rhetoric regarding peace talks might be influenced by the upcoming US presidential election.
