Russia imposes entry ban on over 130 Australian citizens amid ongoing sanctions

29 October 2024 20:55

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced on its website that it has indefinitely closed entry to the Russian Federation for 131 additional Australian citizens as part of ongoing sanctions.

This new restriction targets individuals associated with the military-industrial complex, journalists, and public figures deemed to be promoting an "anti-Russian agenda," Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

The ministry indicated that efforts to update the Russian "stop list" will continue, providing a comprehensive list of the Australian citizens affected by the latest measures.

This announcement follows Australia's recent imposition of sanctions on three Russian individuals linked to the hacker group Evil Corp. The Australian Foreign Ministry stated that these sanctions entail criminal liability for any assets provided to these individuals. According to the ministry, the three Russians hold senior roles within Evil Corp, which has been responsible for cyberattacks in Europe and the United States for over a decade, causing multi-million dollar damages and disruptions to the healthcare system and public sector.

In a related context, Elon Musk previously criticized the Australian government, labeling it "fascist."

Responding to a post on X about the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s new powers to fine social media platforms 5 per cent of their global revenue for failing to comply with its regulations, Musk said just one word: “Fascists.”
