Russia rules out third-party mediation in Istanbul talks with Ukraine

30 May 2025 17:31

The upcoming negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul will be conducted directly without the involvement of any mediators, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced on May 30.

Speaking to reporters, Zakharova clarified that while Russia appreciates Türkiye’s hospitality and the role it has played in hosting the discussions, there is no question of Turkish or any other third-party mediation in the talks, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

“Of course, we are deeply grateful to our Turkish friends for their hospitality,” the official noted.

She also commented on the recent statements made by US Special Envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg, who suggested that officials from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and France would be present in Istanbul on June 2. Zakharova dismissed any connection between their possible visit and the Russia-Ukraine negotiations.

“As a democratic state based on the rule of law, Russia respects the universal human rights principle of freedom of movement. Everyone can travel wherever he or she wishes. However, we do not see any connection between the movements of representatives of the above four states and the bilateral Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul,” Zakharova said.

The Russian side also addressed comments from Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who recently urged Moscow to adopt a more flexible stance in the talks to avoid a disadvantageous outcome. Zakharova noted the statement but maintained that Russia’s position remains firm on the format of the negotiations.

Confirming its participation, Russia announced that a delegation led by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky will attend the second round of talks in Istanbul on June 2. The delegation is expected to bring a draft memorandum and additional proposals aimed at achieving a ceasefire.
