Russian ambassador to UK denounces potential seizure of assets as “theft”
Russian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Andrey Kelin has warned that any attempt by London to seize frozen Russian assets would be considered an act of theft by Moscow.
The statement came during a cultural event in London on November 28, where Kelin spoke to journalists about the ongoing tensions surrounding the EU and UK plans to use Russian funds to aid Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“Perhaps it [withdrawal] will take place, or will not take place… There is an incomprehensible internal work going on. In any case, it will be theft of our assets,” Kelin said.
The ambassador also expressed surprise that the UK’s Finance Minister, Rachel Reeves, referenced frozen Russian assets as part of the 2026 budget presentation. Commenting on the budget itself, Kelin described it as “pessimistic” for the United Kingdom.
“It’s a little weird. Russian assets have absolutely nothing to do with the budget message,” he said.
Kelin’s remarks come amid efforts in Europe to resolve the status of Russian assets. On November 26, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled a set of proposals for the release of frozen Russian funds. She emphasized that financial support for Ukraine should not rely solely on European taxpayers.
Russian President Vladimir Putin echoed the concerns on November 27, warning that confiscating Russian assets in the European Union could have negative consequences. He stated that the Russian government is preparing a package of countermeasures in response, under his instructions.
