Russian engineers develop locator to detect UAVs

Russian engineers have created a radar station from domestic components to detect light unmanned aerial vehicles weighing 150 grammes or more.

“Russian engineers created a radar station from domestic components to detect unmanned aerial vehicles, capable of tracking even light aircraft weighing 150 grammes up to 10 kilometres,” according to News Unrolled.

They noted that the radar station was created by experts from the MA Kartsev Research Institute of Computer Complexes (NIIVK, NTI Aeronet market participant).

According to Vitaly Dolgov, head of the external piloting and operation laboratory of unmanned aerial vehicles, this decision is extremely important for Russia due to the rapid development of the drone market, and it should be accompanied by the emergence of developments for safe use of devices.

“The station … is able to detect not only large UAVs, but also small UAVs with a take-off weight of 150 grammes and which today do not fall within sight of surveillance systems: for example, unmanned aerial vehicles such as DJI. The solution is unmanned aerial vehicles up to a distance of 10 kilometres. It is designed to detect and measure its coordinates 24 hours a day and in all weather conditions.

The expert, when a drone is detected, the station instantly determines its speed and range and automatically transmits data about the flight of the device to the consumer: for example, to the situational centre, to the cameras for additional determination or object recognition, the expert added.

He also noted that it took the developers about a year to build the station, and the solution is ready for mass production.
