Armenian judge reprimanded for procedural violations
The Supreme Judicial Council of Armenia has issued an official reprimand to Judge Masis Melkonyan following findings of procedural misconduct during a recent criminal case.
The Council’s press service confirmed that the Ethics and Disciplinary Commission of the General Assembly of Judges petitioned for disciplinary action against Melkonyan, which was subsequently approved, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
The case materials reveal that Judge Melkonyan failed to inform the accused of their right to remain silent and did not caution them regarding the obligation to provide truthful testimony, violations of established criminal procedural law. During the disciplinary proceedings, Melkonyan acknowledged breaching these legal norms.
Armenian media also highlights that Judge Melkonyan is known for previously authorising a two-month detention of Bagrat Galstanyan, as well as the head of the Shirak Diocese, Mikael Adzhapahyan.
