Russian fighters intercept US B-52 bombers near state border
On July 21, Russian MiG-29 and MiG-31 fighters successfully intercepted two US Air Force B-52N strategic bombers, preventing them from violating the Russian state border.
The incident occurred over the Barents Sea when Russian airspace control detected a group of air targets approaching the border, according to a report from the Russian Defense Ministry, cited by Caliber.Az via foreign media.
To identify the air targets and prevent any border violations, the Russian Defense Ministry deployed MiG-29 and MiG-31 fighters. The Russian pilots quickly identified the approaching aircraft as US B-52N strategic bombers. Upon the approach of the Russian fighters, the US bombers turned away from the Russian state border, averting any breach of airspace.
The Defense Ministry confirmed that the Russian aircraft safely returned to their home airfields following the interception. The ministry emphasized that the mission was conducted in strict compliance with international rules governing the use of airspace over neutral waters, ensuring adherence to all safety measures.
