Russian, US top diplomats discuss "new ideas" for resolution of Ukraine conflict During Kuala Lumpur meeting
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio have exchanged new ideas for Ukraine peace talks during their meeting in Malaysia on July 10.
Responding to reporters during a press conference following the exchange, Rubio characterized the talks as having "a new and a different approach," Caliber.Az reports citing CTV News.
The meeting occurred on the sidelines of the annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations Regional Forum, which brings together 10 ASEAN members and their most important diplomatic partners including Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, European nations and the US.
The US secretary told reporters after the 50-minute meeting with his Russian counterpart that Washington expects "to see a roadmap moving forward about how this conflict can conclude.
Commenting on the new proposals discussed with the Russian foreign minister, Rubio characterized them as not being "something that guarantees a peace but it’s a concept that, you know, that I’ll take back to the president.”
Marco Rubio and Sergey Lavrov sat down shortly after the US resumed shipments of defensive weapons to Ukraine, which marked an end to the temporary pause that was publicly attributed to a Pentagon review of munitions stockpiles. US President Donald Trump, who had repeatedly expressed his hesitations over continued arms support to Kyiv throughout the past year, made his frustration clear with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Following the meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Rubio said President Trump has been “disappointed and frustrated that there’s not been more flexibility on the Russian side to bring about an end to this conflict. “We hope that can change ... and we’re going to continue to stay involved where we see opportunities to make a difference,” he said.
