Serbia's president vows power generators, transformers to Ukraine

27 October 2024 10:07

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that Serbia will provide Ukraine with generators and transformers valued at €8.4 million.

The president made the statement specifying that Serbia’s new ambassador to Ukraine would deliver the equipment, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

“We have gathered generators and transformers for Ukraine worth €8.4 million,” Vučić stated.

Meanwhile, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin, on October 24, claimed that a recent attack by Ukrainian forces on Russia’s Kursk region was primarily aimed at seizing control of a nuclear power plant in the area.

In remarks on October 22, Vučić expressed frustration with international political discourse. He criticized foreign leaders who emphasize Ukraine’s territorial integrity while ignoring the Kosovo issue, stating that the double standards have become intolerable for Serbs. Vučić noted that Serbia has been on the path to EU integration since 2000, yet many are growing disillusioned with the process.

Since 2022, Serbia has accepted Ukrainian refugees, sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine and pledged help with its post-war rebuilding effort.

The Financial Times reported on June 22 that Serbian ammunition worth $855 million was sent indirectly to Ukraine.

Serbian-Ukrainian relationships are complicated by Belgrade's friendly attitude toward Russia, as Serbia has refused to join sanctions against Moscow.

However, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic calls Ukraine a "friendly country" and had previously affirmed that Crimea and Donbas are Ukrainian sovereign territories.

Besides, Serbia granted Ukraine financial aid worth $32.4 million in March 2024, demonstrating support despite its traditionally close ties with Russia and refusal to join sanctions against Moscow.
