Serbian president signals possible early resignation, rules out another run
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has suggested the possibility of ending his mandate early and holding simultaneous parliamentary and presidential elections in late 2026.
He made the statement during an interview with the television channel Pink, according to Caliber.Az.
Vučić noted that his current term officially has around a year and a half remaining, but is “likely to end sooner.”
He added that the government is considering holding both elections simultaneously, saying, “We will most likely have presidential and parliamentary elections together — probably in December 2026, or perhaps even a bit earlier.”
The president stressed that he has no intention of seeking constitutional changes to allow another run for office. “We don’t want to amend the Constitution; I have no plans to run for president again,” he said.
Vučić was first elected president in 2017 and re-elected in 2022. His current term is set to expire in 2027, according to Pink.
His rule has been marked by strong control over state institutions and media, as well as a balancing act between Serbia’s EU aspirations and close ties with Russia and China.
