Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles unveiled the new advanced trainer programme during a session at the Senate Committee on Armed Services. The initiative aims to replace the aging F-5M fleet currently serving in the Spanish Air and Space Forces. The programme is based on the HÜRJET, an advanced jet trainer and light combat aircraft developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ). The aircraft will be developed jointly by Spanish and Turkish industries under a bilateral agreement.
Robles confirmed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been signed to formalize the joint development process. Furthermore, an industrial cooperation plan involving Airbus, TUSAŞ, and 15 Spanish companies was signed at the FEINDEF defence exhibition on May 14. Highlighting the strategic importance of the collaboration, Robles stated, “Although the platform is originally Turkish, the goal of this agreement is to develop an advanced trainer specifically designed for Spain, with national design authority.”
