Spain: Major fire triggers partial evacuation at Cartagena’s Santa Lucía hospital VIDEO
A major fire in Spain has forced the partial evacuation of the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena (Murcia) on the morning of November 26, though no injuries were reported.
The blaze broke out at around 7:30 am on the terrace of Block 5, spreading quickly across the building’s façade and reaching the third and fifth floors, according to Cartagena’s mayor, Noelia Arroyo, Caliber.Az reports, citing Spanish media.
Around 20 firefighters were deployed to tackle the flames, which were brought under control shortly after 8 am.
The hospital’s emergency plan was activated immediately, leading to the evacuation of patients in rooms closest to the fire. Strong winds contributed to the fire’s spread, affecting parts of Blocks 4 and 6 as well.
Fire crews are inspecting rooms and bathrooms on the affected floors to assess smoke damage. Arroyo said all available municipal fire and rescue teams had been mobilised.
Local police have urged motorists to avoid the area to ensure emergency services can operate without obstruction.
Emergency hotline 112 reported receiving more than 30 calls about the incident shortly after 7:25 am, a particularly difficult time due to staff shift changes at the hospital.
