Spain to spend €2 billion on artillery ammunition to replenish stocks Depleted by Ukraine aid

10 March 2025 17:31

Spain’s Ministry of Defence is set to purchase €2 billion worth of artillery ammunition to replenish stocks that have been exhausted through shipments to Ukraine.

Thus, the During the war in Ukraine, the Army's arsenals reached points of exhaustion such that the Spanish artillery would not have been able to sustain more than seven days of high-intensity warfare, Caliber.Az reports per Cuban media.

As a result, the Army has made it a priority to replenish its ammunition stores to "move away from critical levels," according to the same sources.

“The priority task for the army is to restore ammunition supplies in order to avoid a critical shortage,” a source familiar with the matter told the newspaper.

The Spanish army plans to acquire at least 500,000 155mm shells, which, according to NATO standards, is the minimum required for high-intensity warfare. The ammunition will be sourced from Spanish and American manufacturers.

The cost of standard shells is expected to range between €1,500 and €3,000 per unit, while precision-guided munitions are priced at over €100,000 per shell. In addition to conventional artillery, the Ministry of Defence is considering the purchase of guided projectiles with a range of up to 50 kilometres.

This ammunition acquisition comes amid rising military spending across Europe and increasing pressure from the United States. NATO countries are expected to show progress on stockpile increases at the upcoming summit in The Hague in June, with the goal of avoiding criticism from Washington over insufficient supplies.

An official source added, “The need for replenishing ammunition stocks is critical, and Spain must act swiftly to meet operational requirements in the event of future escalations.”
