Spanish PM accuses EU of “double standards” over Ukraine, Middle East
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has said that the European Union applies “double standards” in its approach to the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Sánchez stated that his proposal to suspend the EU Association Agreement with Israel over the conflict in the Middle East did not receive support from several member states. Media reports indicate that, in particular, Germany and Italy opposed the initiative, EFE reports.
The Spanish prime minister warned that a lack of a unified position undermines the credibility of the European Union, arguing that the bloc risks weakening its political legitimacy if it fails to apply consistent approaches to such crises.
Sánchez also said that differing approaches within Europe to the conflict in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East are shaping perceptions of EU policy.
“And, obviously, neither in Lebanon, nor in the West Bank, nor, of course, in Gaza, does Israel comply with international law, and that should also lead us to reflect,” he said.
