Sweden to equip army with attack drones for first time
Sweden’s armed forces will receive attack drones for the first time, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration has stated.
The administration said it signed a contract worth 350 million kronor ($32 million), with deliveries expected next year, Caliber.Az reports, citing Swedish media.
Until now, the Swedish military has used drones solely for reconnaissance and surveillance. It is now purchasing systems capable of destroying enemy targets for the first time.
Lennart Widerström, head of the Ground Combat School, described the move as the beginning of a new phase, saying future purchases would be made from different manufacturers.
He said the decision was directly linked to lessons learned from Ukraine.
“All armies in the world are learning lessons from current wars, and the war in Ukraine is at the centre of our attention,” Widerström added.
