Syria bans import of goods from Russia, Israel, Iran

19 January 2025 12:02

Syria's Transition and Ports Administration has issued a new decree prohibiting the entry of goods from Iran, Russia, and Israel.

This follows earlier restrictions imposed by the Syrian government on the entry of citizens from Iran and Israel, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

This action escalates tensions in the region, especially between Syria and these nations, and has an impact on international trade. The decision is particularly important for neighboring countries and global commerce, especially for Türkiye, which maintains strong trade ties with Syria.

The Syrian Ministry of Finance issued a decree on December 17, prohibiting the entry of goods from Iran, Israel, and Russia into Syria. This ban will apply at all land and sea border crossings throughout the country. In addition, Syrian authorities have barred Iranian and Israeli nationals from entering the country.

This move also impacts airlines, with Turkish Airlines announcing that it will cease transporting passengers from Iran and Israel to Syria. Regarding airline impact, Turkish Airlines, which had resumed flights to Damascus, is adhering to the new regulation and will no longer fly passengers from Iran or Israel to Syria.

On December 8, 2024, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime collapsed as opposition forces, primarily led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), seized control of Damascus. This marked the end of over 13 years of Assad's rule and the Assad family's dominance in Syria since 1971.

Following the regime's collapse, Assad fled Syria and sought asylum in Russia.

The fall of Assad's regime has led to significant political changes in Syria. The Syrian Salvation Government, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, has established a transitional government in Damascus. Efforts are underway to rebuild the nation, address humanitarian concerns, and establish a new constitution.
